A DESERT PLACE
"And the apostles gathered themselves together unto
Jesus, and told Him all things, both what they had done, and what they
had taught. And He said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a
desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going,
and they had no leisure so much as to eat." MARK 6:30,31
How wonderful to be able to gather ourselves together unto the Lord
Jesus and to tell Him all things. That is what we do at Prayer Meetings.
Of course we also need to remember to give Him praise, and thanks, as
well as asking petitions of Him. The apostles did this also, I'm sure.
But now, notice the compassion, the heart of Jesus. He had concern
for them. "Come ye yorselves apart into a desert place and rest a while:
"He says unto them. Would it not be great to be there with Him, to feel,
and to experience that same concern and compassion for ourselves. But
we can know and experience His compassion, His wonderous love. The
following is an example:
"Now before the fest of the Passover, when
Jesus knew that His hour was come that He should depart out of this
world unto the Father, having LOVED HIS OWN WHICH WERE IN THE WORLD,
HE LOVED THEM UNTO THE END." JOHN 13:1
"Casting all your care upon Him: FOR HE CARETH FOR YOU." 1 PETER
5:7 "Husbands, love your wives, even as CHRIST ALSO LOVED THE CHURCH,
and gave Himself for it." EPH. 5:25
It is always so comforting to think of that wonderous Love and
compassion that Christ has for us, the Church, His body. The apostle
John often referred to himself as the apostle that Jesus loved. He
never made reference to his love of Christ, (as far as I have found),
however I'm sure that he did. But, he considered it more important
that Christ loved him. We should really think on this as speaking of
how much we love Christ or God, but to bask in His love for us. How
wonderful, simple, and comforting. Peter learned a lesson about himself
when Christ had to ask him thrice, "lovest thou Me more than these?"
So consider for ourselves, what's more important?
But now, the Lord said to the apostles "Come ye yourselves apart
into a desert place."He was concerned that they didn't have time even
to eat because the place was very busy. There is a lesson for us here
also. When we are constantly busy, we may forget to eat, that is to
feed upon Christ. When troubles abound. we can't eat, we can't drink.
God placed a lambs nostrils close to their mouth so we could see an
example of this lesson. A lamb cannot drink from troubled water. Hence
we see in Psalms 23 that...."He leadeth me beside the still waters."
So it is that the Lord would desire for us to at times to "come ye
apart into a desert place" and to have daily quiet times with the
Lord. So not only does He desire us to come together in collective
prayer but also to be alone at times in solitary prayer.
